Dr. Diane

Imagine your kiddo gets sick. So, so sick.

And you have to go to the hospital and stay there for weeks at a time. Sometimes months.

Imagine your child having to go through painful procedures.
Painful post-surgery healing.
Daily aches. Daily pain and nausea.
What if he is so sick, he doesn’t get to see his friends very often, if at all?
And anytime he has a fever, you have to run back into the hospital? Ugh.
What if your baby slept each night in a crib that wasn’t in your home?
What if you spent weeks at a time sleeping in a hospital room instead of your own bed?
What if your teen missed that big homecoming game? That movie date with friends? One after the other after the other.
This is the life of a child with cancer (or their parent).

When I did my hospital training to become a pediatrician years ago, my cancer patients were and are the ones that I have held in my heart the strongest. They have come with me every step of the way.

It is no exaggeration to tell you that I still think of the children for whom I cared. The ones who were victorious in their long battles. The ones who were not. I remember their names. The day they rang the bell. The cheerleading outfit she asked to be dressed in when she died. The joy on his face when the video game console rolled into the room. The crunched up nose at the scent of another day of hospital oatmeal. The rosiness of their cheeks when they finally got OUT. The coloring books. Oh, the coloring books! I think of them all. the. time.

I've taken a lot of photos. I’m selling prints of my photos. 100% of any money I make is going to the Cook Children’s Hematology-Oncology floor - specifically, the areas that bring joy and comfort to the patients and their families.

Toys. Crafts. Books. A pool table. Bikes to ride up and down the hallway. Supplies for the Child Life team (who help children understand their bodies, their medical care, and help them cope with pain). Treats and toys for Chanel, the loving and dedicated pup that visits them daily. More comfortable beds and accommodations for patients’ parents and extended families. Games and technology for the teen room. A COLOR PRINTER to put alllll the child's beautiful art in a book for their parents! Whatever they need.

Over time these photos will be updated with both more of my photos AND the prints of my professional photographer friends who have volunteered to help out. ❤️ Please visit often. Consider prints for friends this holiday season!
